When to go
November opens with the TCS New York City Marathon, which the city's tourism board lists for the first day of the month, and the New York Comedy Festival follows in the first half of the month. The Radio City Christmas Spectacular starts early in the month, and the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade falls on Thanksgiving Day, which the tourism board says marks the parade's hundredth year. NOAA's normals for Central Park give the usual highs, lows and precipitation, and the tourism board's weather guide calls the fall chilly and crisp and advises layers. The same guide notes that Atlantic storms occasionally reach the city, mostly from August to early November, so check the forecast close to your dates.

Flights
The tourism board lists JFK, LaGuardia and Newark Liberty as the three major airports in the area, so compare flights into each against how you will reach your stay. The Port Authority's JFK advisories say redevelopment construction is affecting the airport's roads and strongly advise using mass transit to and from the airport. Domestic flyers should also read the TSA's REAL ID page, which says travelers must be REAL ID compliant to board domestic flights. Check the airlines directly for current flight and route information.

Where to stay
Compare neighborhoods by how close they are to the events you plan to attend and to a subway line, since the tourism board's marathon guide says the race plays havoc on surface transit and that the subways can be crowded afterwards. If you are weighing a hotel against a rental, read the New York City Office of Special Enforcement's page on short-term rentals, which sets out when they are legal in the city. Check cancellation terms and whether your dates overlap with marathon day or Thanksgiving Day.

Getting around
The tourism board calls New York an excellent walking city, with the subway and buses for longer trips. The MTA says tap and ride works on subways and buses and that fares are capped for the week when you use the same card or device, so stick to one payment method. On marathon day the tourism board's guide says surface transit, including cars and cabs, is disrupted and the subways can be crowded afterwards, so plan your route in advance.
