When to go

December is Christmas-market season in Vienna: the Vienna Tourist Board lists the Rathausplatz market and the Schönbrunn Palace market with their own dates and hours, including shorter hours on Christmas Eve. The City of Vienna's holiday list shows the Immaculate Conception holiday and both Christmas holidays in the month, so check opening hours around those dates. GeoSphere Austria's most recent normals put the average daily minimum below freezing and list some snow days, so pack warm layers.

Flights

The Vienna Tourist Board's airport-to-city page covers the connections from Vienna Airport, and it says a central section of the inner-city S-Bahn is closed to rail traffic for modernization works during the period it lists, so check that page for the options that apply on your dates. For entry, the EU's official travel site says the Entry/Exit System is fully operational at external border crossing points and that ETIAS is not in operation, so check that site and the State Department's page for Austria before you go. Check the airlines directly for current flight and route information.

Where to stay

Weigh a stay near the Rathausplatz market the Vienna Tourist Board lists against one near a subway line, since the subway runs from early morning until about midnight. If the Schönbrunn Palace market is on your list, compare the distance and the transit options to it, and check cancellation terms. The City of Vienna's local tax page lists the rate for this period, so check it against your dates.

Getting around

The Vienna Tourist Board describes the subway as running from early morning until about midnight, with trams and buses normally stopping earlier. Night buses run daily in the small hours, and the same page points to the operator's line schedules for details.
