Tokyo in October

When to go

GO TOKYO's October guide says temperatures gradually get cooler through the month, a light jacket is worth carrying for chilly nights, and visitors should be prepared for the occasional rainy day and on the alert for typhoons. The WMO normals show a mild month with a large monthly precipitation total. Sports Day is a national holiday on the Cabinet Office's list, and GO TOKYO says public holidays bring crowds to popular sights and congestion on roads and public transport, so check your dates against it.

  • GO TOKYO's accommodations page says that private lodging registered or permitted in Tokyo should have a registration number beginning with "M13" or a permit number combining numbers with characters such as kanji or hiragana, and to contact the facility directly if the details are not listed on its website. • GO TOKYO says IC cards can be used on many major rail and bus services in the metropolitan area, and that Welcome Suica and TOURIST PASMO, for short-term foreign visitors, do not require a deposit but can only be used for 28 days. (www.gotokyo.org, checked )

Flights

Both Haneda and Narita connect to the city by rail: the Haneda terminal website says the airport is directly connected to the Keikyu Line and the Tokyo Monorail Line and gives estimated times to major stations, while Narita's operator lists rail access by the Narita Sky Access, Keisei and JR lines. Compare those routes when you look at flights, and check the airlines directly for current schedules and any weather-related changes. For entry, the Japan National Tourism Organization says a valid passport is required and that holders of some countries' passports need no visa for short tourism stays, so confirm what applies to yours on the State Department's page for Japan, and note that Japan Customs recommends declaring through Visit Japan Web.

Getting around

Rail and bus services across the metropolitan area accept IC cards, and GO TOKYO notes that Welcome Suica and TOURIST PASMO exist for short-term foreign visitors with a limited period of use, so check how long yours lasts. From either airport, the rail lines named in the airport facts reach central stations such as Tokyo and Shinagawa, so you can plan your first transfer around them. GO TOKYO also warns of congested roads and public transport on public holidays, so allow extra time on those dates.
