When to go

Destination NSW says summer in Sydney runs from December to February, so January sits in the middle of it, and the Bureau of Meteorology's Observatory Hill statistics in the facts give the month's temperatures and rainfall. The NSW Government lists New Year's Day and Australia Day as public holidays this month, and Destination NSW's events page lists the Sydney Festival in January, so check the festival's own site for its program before you fix dates. The UK government's travel advice for Australia mentions the risk of bushfires, especially at the height of the Australian summer from November to February, so check the Bureau of Meteorology's warnings that Destination NSW points visitors to.

Flights

The Department of Home Affairs' Electronic Travel Authority page lists the United States of America among the eligible passports and says it suggests not making travel arrangements until the authority is granted, so read it before you finalize flights. Sydney Airport's own website gives the train travel time into the city, which is worth weighing when you compare arrival times. For US government guidance, see the State Department's page for Australia, and check the airlines directly for current flight and route information.
