When to go

In January the WMO normals from Chile's national weather service show hot afternoons, much cooler nights and almost no rain, so plan for heat by day and a layer after dark. New Year's Day is one of the holidays on which Chile's labor directorate says retail workers must rest, with exceptions such as restaurants and airport shops, so check opening hours around it.

Flights

Santiago's main gateway is Comodoro Arturo Merino Benítez Airport, which Sernatur calls Chile's main air terminal. Chile's consular visa table lists no visa requirement for United States citizens, and the national migration service says the stay is recorded on a migration card that the police hand over on arrival. When you compare flights, check arrival times against your transfer plans, especially around New Year's Day, and check the State Department's page for Chile before you travel.

Where to stay

Sernatur's Santiago page lists the historic center, the Lastarria and Bellas Artes neighborhood, and Barrio Italia and Bellavista among the capital's unmissable attractions, so compare stays in or near those areas by their distance from a Metro station. The airport lies well outside the center, so weigh how you will reach your lodging on arrival. Read cancellation terms carefully, especially for stays around New Year.

Getting around

The airport operator says to book taxis, buses or transfers only at the official counters inside the terminal, and Sernatur says direct buses link the airport with the Pajaritos and Los Héroes Metro stations. In the city, the bip! card is the official way to pay on buses, the Metro and MetroTren Nos, and you can buy it at Metro ticket offices. The Metro closes at night and opens later on Sundays and holidays, so check its hours for New Year's Day.
