When to go

December comes just after the Atlantic hurricane season, which the National Hurricane Center dates to the end of November, though it notes that storms sometimes form outside those dates. The Saint Lucia Meteorological Services counts December as the start of the dry season, and the World Meteorological Organization lists the December highs, lows, rainfall and rain days at Vieux-Fort, though its older averages put December's rainfall above the range the Met Services gives for the dry season. The tourism authority lists National Day on the thirteenth, with the Festival of Lights in Castries the evening before: a lantern parade, music and fireworks over the city.

Flights

Saint Lucia's online customs and immigration form opens shortly before travel, takes one submission per family or group and sends a receipt by email to show on arrival. The tourism authority says visitors must travel with a valid passport and that many United States travelers do not need a visa for a short visit, but it advises confirming requirements with official government sources, so also read the State Department's page for Saint Lucia. Check whether your flight lands at Hewanorra in the south or at George F. L. Charles, the inter-island airport near Castries, and check the airlines directly for current routes and schedules.

Where to stay

If the Festival of Lights is on your list, weigh how close each stay is to Castries, which the tourism authority places in the north with Rodney Bay and Reduit Beach. Hewanorra International Airport sits in Vieux Fort in the south, well away from the capital, so compare transfer distances too, and check availability and cancellation terms for your holiday dates.

Getting around

Authorized taxis carry light blue plates with a TX prefix, and the tourism authority advises confirming the fare before you set off. Minibuses with green plates and an M prefix are the main transport for residents, with fares in Eastern Caribbean dollars. To drive yourself you need a temporary local license, available at the airport, the police station in Castries or rental offices, and traffic keeps to the left. On the eve of National Day, plan your trips to and from Castries ahead of time.
