When to go

January sits inside the dry season that Mexico's protected-areas commission describes for Tulum National Park, which also names January as the coldest month there. The Caribe Mexicano tourism site's weather page calls this the season of nortes, cold fronts that cool the nights and sometimes stir the sea, so check sea conditions and the forecast if your plans depend on boats or snorkeling. New Year's Day is a mandatory rest day under Mexican labor law, so check opening hours, tours and transport schedules around it.

Flights

The tourism site says two airports serve this coast, Cancún in the north and Tulum in the south, so compare flights into both against where you plan to stay and how you would cover the distance between them, especially if you travel around New Year's Day. The immigration institute explains how foreign nationals arriving by air obtain the digital migration form, and the Visitax site of the state tax service says foreign tourists who visit Quintana Roo must pay its tax. Before you go, read those two pages and the State Department's page for Mexico.

Where to stay

Start with the stretch of coast where you want to spend your days. The tourism site describes the Riviera Maya as running from Puerto Morelos to Tulum and says the Cancún airport is closer to Puerto Morelos and Playa del Carmen, while the Tulum airport is closer to Akumal and Tulum. Compare properties by their distance from the airport you plan to use, from a Tren Maya station or bus terminal, and, if you plan to cross to Cozumel, from the ferry terminal in Playa del Carmen. Then read the booking terms and check whether your dates include New Year's Day.

Getting around

The tourism site lists Tren Maya stations at Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and the Tulum airport, frequent buses between the terminals in those three towns, and a ferry terminal in the center of Playa del Carmen with crossings to Cozumel. For the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, the protected-areas commission lists a private or rented car as the only means of transport and says operators enter by prior reservation or through authorized providers, so confirm access and hours on its page. Check each operator's current timetable, especially around New Year's Day and when the nortes affect the sea.
