When to go

February is still inside the dry season that the Caribe Mexicano tourism site lists as the best time to visit the Riviera Maya, and its weather page lists the month's temperatures and rainfall from national weather service averages. The same page says February is usually carnival month, with the date changing each year with the Lent calendar, so confirm dates before you plan around a carnival. The first Monday of February is a mandatory rest day under Mexican labor law, so check opening hours and transport schedules around it. Mexico's navy describes the sargassum cycle on the coast of Quintana Roo as running from April to October, and conditions change, so check the official monitoring before you travel.

Flights

The tourism site says two airports serve this coast, Cancún in the north and Tulum in the south, so compare flights into both against where you plan to stay and how you would cover the distance between them. The immigration institute explains how foreign nationals arriving by air obtain the digital migration form, and the Visitax site of the state tax service says foreign tourists who visit Quintana Roo must pay its tax. Before you go, read those two pages and the State Department's page for Mexico.

Where to stay

Start with the stretch of coast where you want to spend your days. The tourism site describes the Riviera Maya as running from Puerto Morelos to Tulum and says the Cancún airport is closer to Puerto Morelos and Playa del Carmen, while the Tulum airport is closer to Akumal and Tulum. Compare properties by their distance from the airport you plan to use, from a Tren Maya station or bus terminal, and, if you plan to cross to Cozumel, from the ferry terminal in Playa del Carmen. Then read the booking terms and check whether your dates include carnival week or the first Monday of the month.
