When to go

January is a warm, wet summer month in the weather normals that the WMO relays from Brazil's national weather service, and the Alerta Rio site run by the city government shows the current rain situation. New Year's Day is a national holiday under Brazilian law, and the city's patron saint, São Sebastião, has a holiday later in the month, so check opening hours around both. Riotur says the street carnival is planned to start in the second half of the month, so check Riotur for the confirmed program.

Flights

Check Brazil's entry rules before you book: the Brazilian consulate in New York says United States citizens need a visitor visa, applied for online as an e-Visa. When you compare flights, check which airport each itinerary uses and its arrival time, especially around New Year's Day, and see how the airport operator RIOgaleão describes its BRT connection to the Metro. Check the State Department's page for Brazil before you travel.

Where to stay

Compare properties by how close they are to the Metro, whose station list includes stops labeled for Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, Botafogo, Flamengo and Barra da Tijuca, and whose published hours differ on holidays. If you plan to be in Rio for the street carnival, check Riotur's program for the neighborhoods involved before you choose. Read the booking terms carefully before you commit.

Getting around

The Metro publishes different hours for Sundays and holidays, so check them for New Year's Day. The city's Jaé ticketing system is used on municipal transport such as the BRT and can also be used to board the Metro. The BRT line to the airport runs from Terminal Alvorada and Madureira Station, so confirm timetables with the operators before you go.
