When to go

February is when the Special Group samba school parades take place, according to Riotur's Carnival site, which lists the parade nights for the upcoming Carnival across a Sunday, a Monday and a Tuesday in the first half of the month. Riotur also says the street carnival is planned to start earlier, in the second half of January. The weather normals that the WMO relays from Brazil's national weather service show warm, wet conditions for February, and the Alerta Rio site shows the current rain situation.

Flights

Check Brazil's entry rules first: the Brazilian consulate in New York says United States citizens need a visitor visa, applied for online as an e-Visa. When you compare flights, check which airport each itinerary uses and its arrival time, and remember that Brazilian law places the State of Rio de Janeiro in a time zone behind Greenwich. The airport operator RIOgaleão describes its BRT connection to the Metro, and the State Department's page for Brazil is the place to check travel advisories.

Where to stay

Parade nights fall on consecutive days, so decide first how close you want to be to the Metro, whose station list includes stops labeled for Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, Botafogo, Flamengo and Barra da Tijuca. Check Riotur's Carnival site for parade and street programs near any neighborhood you are considering, and read each property's booking terms carefully.

Getting around

The Metro publishes its operating hours, with different hours on Sundays and holidays, so check them for the days you plan to travel. The city's Jaé ticketing system is used on municipal transport such as the BRT and can also be used to board the Metro. For Carnival nights, check Riotur's Carnival site and the operators for any changes before you head out.
