When to go

December is a warm, wet month in the weather normals that the WMO relays from Brazil's national weather service, and the Alerta Rio site run by the city government shows the current rain situation if you want to check conditions closer to your dates. Christmas Day is a national holiday under Brazilian law, so check opening hours and transport schedules around it. New Year's Eve is a large celebration that the city government runs through Riotur, and last year's edition drew crowds counted in the millions, so look at Riotur's program for this year before you plan around that night.

Flights

Before you book, check Brazil's entry rules: the Brazilian consulate in New York says United States citizens need a visitor visa, applied for online as an e-Visa. When you compare flights, check which airport each itinerary uses and the arrival time, because the airport operator RIOgaleão publishes how its BRT line connects with the Metro. Brazilian law places the State of Rio de Janeiro in a time zone behind Greenwich, so allow for the time difference, and check the State Department's page for Brazil before you travel.

Where to stay

Choose where to stay by how you plan to get around: the Metro's station list includes stops labeled for Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, Botafogo, Flamengo and Barra da Tijuca, while the BRT line to the airport starts from Barra da Tijuca and Madureira. Compare each property's walking distance to a Metro or BRT station and to the beach, and read the booking terms carefully. If your dates include New Year's Eve, check Riotur's program for the neighborhood you pick before you commit.

Getting around

The Metro runs on published hours that differ on Sundays and holidays, so check them for Christmas Day. The city's ticketing system, Jaé, is used on municipal transport such as the BRT and can also be used to board the Metro. The BRT line to the airport runs from Terminal Alvorada and Madureira Station and passes a station that connects with the Metro, so check current timetables with the operators.
