Reykjavík in June

When to go

June brings the midnight-sun season: Visit Iceland says that in the south, including Reykjavík, the sun only dips for about three hours near the solstice and it never truly gets dark. The WMO table for Reykjavik lists the month's average daily high, low and rainfall, so look at those numbers and a current forecast before you pack. National Day, which marks the founding of the republic, is celebrated in June, so compare your dates with it. The road authority says mountain-road openings depend on spring and early-summer conditions, especially snowpack, so check its page if you plan to leave the city.

Flights

Keflavík Airport sits on the Reykjanes peninsula, away from the capital, according to the airport operator's own site, so plan the transfer into Reykjavík as part of the journey. Compare routes, connections and total travel time on the airlines' own sites rather than relying on a single schedule. Strætó, the capital area's public transport operator, lists a bus route between the airport and the Reykjavík area on its site. Check the State Department's page for Iceland and Iceland's government portal for entry rules before you book.

Where to stay

Visit Reykjavík's neighbourhood guide calls Miðbær the heart of the city and says it is home to many of the city's top attractions, while it describes Vesturbær as a quieter area to the west that is still close to the main attractions. Compare walking distance to the places on your list against how much activity you want outside your window, especially around National Day. Then check cancellation terms, house rules and whether your dates overlap with city events.

Getting around

Strætó runs the capital area's public buses, and its notice about the airport route says passengers can pay with cash or contactless payment cards. Check Strætó's current timetable for your dates, because routes and schedules change. If you plan to drive outside the city, the road authority publishes a map in spring and into summer showing where mountain roads are open, so check it before you set out.
