Reykjavík in July

When to go

Visit Iceland's July guide says Reykjavík has very long daylight at the start of the month, with the sun barely dipping below the horizon before it is back up again. The WMO table for Reykjavik lists the month's average daily high, low and rainfall, so check those figures and a current forecast before you pack. SafeTravel says F-roads are usually closed until June or July and points to the national traffic-information site for whether they are open, so look there before planning any interior route.

Flights

The airport operator's site places Keflavík Airport on the Reykjanes peninsula, away from the city, so the transfer into Reykjavík is part of the trip. Visit Iceland calls July one of the most popular travel months, so compare flight options and arrival times on the airlines' own sites well ahead of time. Strætó, the capital area's public transport operator, lists a route that links the airport with the capital area.

Where to stay

Visit Reykjavík's neighbourhood guide describes Laugardalur, just east of the city centre, as home to the city's largest recreational area, including a geothermal pool, a botanical garden and a family park and zoo. Compare that with a base nearer the centre by checking walking distance, bus links and what is on your list nearby. Because Visit Iceland notes that bright summer nights can make sleeping difficult, check whether rooms have window coverings, along with cancellation terms.

Getting around

Strætó lists a bus route from the airport to Reykjavík and says passengers can pay with cash or contactless payment cards. If you rent a car, SafeTravel lists Iceland's driving rules, including a rule that headlights stay on at all times, and the national traffic-information site shows whether F-roads are open. Check both for current conditions before each drive, and use Strætó's timetable if you plan to stay car-free in the capital area.
