Puerto Vallarta in December
When to go
December falls after the eastern Pacific hurricane season, which the National Hurricane Center says ends in November. The Guadalupe festival fills the first part of the month with processions through El Centro toward the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, so check its dates against your trip. Christmas Day is a mandatory rest day under Mexican federal labor law, so check opening hours and tour schedules around it. Whale-watching dates are set each season by the federal environment ministry, and last season's window opened in early December, so check this season's notice before you plan a tour.

Where to stay
Start with the part of the area where you want to spend your days. Compare El Centro, where the tourism board places the Guadalupe processions, with other parts of Puerto Vallarta and with Nuevo Vallarta across the bay in Nayarit, which the airport operator names. Check walking distance to the places on your list, how close each property is to the festival route, and the cancellation terms before you commit.

Getting around
The airport sits in the municipality of Puerto Vallarta, and its operator's site has a ground transportation section to check before you compare transfer options. Under Mexican law, most of the country is on Central time, and Nayarit is on Pacific time except the municipality of Bahía de Banderas, so check the clock if you take a day trip up the coast. During the Guadalupe festival, processions pass through El Centro, so check routes and timing around the church if you plan to cross downtown.
