When to go

April is cherry blossom time in Osaka: the Japan Meteorological Agency's normal full-bloom date for the city falls early in the month, and in some recent years its table shows full bloom in late March. The Osaka Convention & Tourism Bureau names Shirokita Park and the Nishinomaru Garden at Osaka Castle among the places to see the blossoms, and the WMO normals show mild days and cool nights. Showa Day, a national holiday, falls at the end of the month, just before the Cabinet Office's early May holidays, so check your dates against that list.

Flights

Kansai International Airport's station is directly connected to Terminal One, with a free shuttle bus to Terminal Two, and the tourism bureau names the JR Kansai Airport Rapid and Nankai Railways as convenient train routes into the city, with limousine buses as another option. Compare the whole journey rather than just the flight, and check the airlines directly for current flight and route information. For entry, the Japan National Tourism Organization says a valid passport is required and that some passport holders need no visa for short tourism stays, so confirm what applies to yours on the State Department's page for Japan and the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs' website.

Where to stay

The tourism bureau divides the city into Kita, around Umeda, and Minami, around Namba and Tennoji, with the subway linking the two, so compare stays in each against where you plan to spend your days. Weigh cancellation terms against a bloom date that shifts each year and the holidays at the end of the month, and check how Osaka Prefecture's accommodation tax applies to your rate, since the bureau says it is paid to the hotel.
