When to go

July is inside the Atlantic hurricane season, which the National Hurricane Center says runs from the start of June to the end of November, and the center says the first hurricane tends to form in early to mid-August. The Ministry of Tourism's events page lists Bahamas Independence Day this month, and its Junkanoo page says the festival is also celebrated on Independence Day and on many summer Saturdays, so check how your dates line up. The Bahamas Department of Meteorology averages, shown by the World Meteorological Organization, list July highs, lows, rainfall and rain days to weigh against your plans.

Flights

Nassau's Lynden Pindling International Airport is listed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection as a Preclearance location, where travelers are inspected before boarding U.S.-bound flights, so compare return flight times against the office's listed operating hours. Read the Bahamas Department of Immigration's entry pages for passport validity (passport cards are not accepted), the return ticket and arrival card, and which travelers need a visa, and see the State Department's page for The Bahamas. With hurricane season under way, follow the National Hurricane Center and the Ministry's storm page as your date nears, and check the airlines directly for current routes and schedules.

Where to stay

If Junkanoo is on your list, the Ministry of Tourism says the largest celebration takes place on Bay Street in downtown Nassau, so weigh how far each stay is from downtown. Because July is inside hurricane season, read each stay's change and cancellation terms closely and note what they say about storms. The Ministry's storm page is the place to follow its updates for visitors.

Getting around

The Ministry of Tourism's FAQ describes a public jitney bus service on Nassau and Paradise Island that needs exact change, and taxis whose metered rates are set by law, with surcharges often added for extra passengers and luggage. Check the jitney's usual hours against your evening plans, including any Independence Day or Junkanoo events, and ask about taxi surcharges before you set off.
