When to go

December falls after the end of the Atlantic hurricane season, which the National Hurricane Center dates from the start of June to the end of November, although it notes that tropical cyclone activity sometimes occurs outside those dates. The Bahamas Department of Meteorology averages, shown by the World Meteorological Organization, list December highs, lows and rainfall to weigh against the beach and sightseeing days you have in mind. The Ministry of Tourism says the Junkanoo highlight of the year falls on Boxing Day and New Year's Morning on Bay Street in Nassau, so check how your dates line up with those celebrations.

Flights

Nassau's Lynden Pindling International Airport is listed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection as a Preclearance location, where travelers are inspected before boarding U.S.-bound flights, so compare return flight times against the office's listed operating hours. Before you fly, read the Bahamas Department of Immigration's entry pages, which cover passport validity (passport cards are not accepted), the return ticket and arrival card, and which travelers need a visa, and see the State Department's page for The Bahamas. Check the airlines directly for current routes and schedules.

Where to stay

Nassau and Paradise Island are two islands joined by a bridge across Nassau Harbour, according to the Ministry of Tourism. Compare a base in Nassau, where the Ministry places the airport, Downtown Nassau, Government House and the Queen's Staircase, with one on Paradise Island, which it describes as home to large hotels and resorts and a handful of lively beaches. Since Junkanoo takes place on Bay Street in Nassau, weigh how close each stay is to downtown, and check availability and cancellation terms for your exact dates.
