When to go
January falls well outside the official Atlantic hurricane season, which the National Hurricane Center dates from the start of June to the end of November. NOAA's climate normals for Miami International Airport point to mild days, cooler nights and modest rainfall, so pack a light layer. The Capital One Orange Bowl, a College Football Playoff semifinal at Hard Rock Stadium, and the Art Deco Weekend on Ocean Drive both land in mid-month, and the Life Time Miami Marathon and Half closes the month. Check those dates against your own.

Flights
Miami International Airport's own website lists its Metrobus, Metrorail and Tri-Rail connections at the Miami Intermodal Center, so look at it before you land. Domestic flyers should also read the TSA's REAL ID page, which says travelers must be REAL ID compliant to board domestic flights. Where to stay
Compare staying on Miami Beach, close to Ocean Drive and the city's citywide trolley, with downtown or Brickell, where the Metromover runs and the marathon finishes at Bayfront Park. Check whether your dates overlap with the Orange Bowl, Art Deco Weekend or marathon weekend, and look at cancellation terms and how close each stay is to a Metrorail station or a trolley stop before you choose.

Getting around
Metrorail's Orange Line serves the airport station, but the county's page says weekend service is an airport shuttle with a transfer, so match the day to your arrival before counting on the train. County buses, Metrorail and Metromover follow a Sunday schedule on New Year's Day. On marathon morning the race's course page lists road closures in Downtown, Brickell, Miami Beach and Coconut Grove, which it says are subject to change, and recommends the Julia Tuttle Causeway for Miami Beach traffic, so allow extra time and check that page before you drive. If you rent a car, Florida's Turnpike says the toll-by-plate option is not available in rental cars, so ask the rental company how tolls are charged.
