When to go

The national weather agency's long-term averages for October, listed in the facts, show mild days, cool nights and some rain; treat them as a guide, not a forecast. Spain's national holiday falls in October, and esMADRID says the city hosts a military parade every year to mark it, so check opening hours for that day. The Royal Palace switches to its October-to-March hours.

Flights

Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas is the city's airport, and its operator lists the Metro, city and intercity buses including an airport express to Atocha, suburban trains from Terminal four, taxis and car access. Check which terminal your airline uses, since the Metro and train stops differ by terminal. Before you go, read the EU's travel site for the current status of the Entry/Exit System and ETIAS, and the State Department's page for Spain.

Where to stay

Compare walking distance to a Metro station, or to Atocha, where the airport express bus starts, against the places you plan to see. The Metro's airport stations close after midnight, so if you land late, compare how easily a stay is reached by the express bus, which the airport operator lists as running around the clock.

Getting around

Metro de Madrid says single tickets need an extra airport supplement to enter or leave its airport stations, which its Tourist ticket does not, so compare the two for the days you plan to ride. On the national holiday, check the transit operators' service notices before you set out.
