Kyoto in October
When to go
October is the start of autumn in Kyoto, which the city's tourism guide describes as mostly mild and sunny and a popular time to visit, with temperatures staying warm through the month and cooling in November as the maple leaves deepen in color. Two dates to check against your plans are the Jidai Matsuri festival, listed among the guide's main events for the twenty-second, and the Sports Day national holiday. The Japan Meteorological Agency's typhoon normals include October approaches to the mainland, so see the agency's forecasts nearer to your trip.

Flights
Kansai International Airport is one of the airports the Kyoto City Tourism Association's guide lists for reaching Kyoto, and its Getting to Kyoto page describes direct trains from the airport and a JR rapid service from Osaka Station, each with an approximate travel time. The same page also lists Tokyo-area airports and the Shinkansen, so compare the whole journey rather than just the flight. Check the airlines directly for current flight and route information, and check the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs' website and the State Department's page for Japan for entry rules that apply to your passport.
