When to go

March opens Kyoto's flower season: the city's tourism guide describes plum blossoms first, then cherry blossoms, and notes that the April cherry blossoms are particularly beloved. The Japan Meteorological Agency's normals below show cool days, colder nights and a monthly rainfall total worth planning around. Check your dates against the doll-floating ritual at Shimogamo Shrine early in the month and the Vernal Equinox Day holiday dates late in the month.

Flights

Kansai International Airport is one of the airports the Kyoto City Tourism Association's guide lists for reaching Kyoto, and the guide describes direct trains from the airport to Kyoto and a JR rapid service from Osaka Station to Kyoto Station, with approximate travel times on its Getting to Kyoto page. The same page also lists Tokyo-area airports and the Shinkansen, so compare the whole journey rather than just the flight. Check the airlines directly for current flight and route information, and check the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs' website and the State Department's page for Japan for entry rules that apply to your passport.

Where to stay

Compare stays by how close they are to a subway station or bus stop, since the city's guides describe both networks and the rules for using them. Check whether the Kyoto accommodation tax is already included in your booking or must be paid at the property, as Kyoto City's guide explains, and compare cancellation terms. It is also worth checking your dates against the holiday and the Shimogamo ritual noted above before you commit.

Getting around

Kyoto City's bus and subway guide describes two subway lines that meet at Karasuma Oike Station, with service generally running from early morning until late evening. It also notes that the boarding door and the moment you pay differ between the sightseeing limited express buses and other bus routes, so read the instructions before your first ride.
