Hong Kong in March

When to go

The Hong Kong Observatory describes March as milder, with occasional spells of high humidity, and says drizzle and fog sometimes reduce visibility enough to disrupt air traffic and ferry services. Its normals show a mild, humid month, with fog on some days. The Easter general holidays fall at the end of March in the coming year, so check opening hours and your dates against the government's list.

Flights

The Airport Express links the airport with Central, with Kowloon and Hong Kong stations offering in-town check-in, so compare the whole journey when you look at flights, and check the airlines directly for current schedules, since the Observatory notes that fog and drizzle occasionally disrupt air traffic in spring. For entry, the Immigration Department lists a visa-free period for visits on a United States passport and expects visitors to hold onward or return tickets and enough funds, so confirm what applies to you there and on the State Department's page for Hong Kong.

Where to stay

The Hong Kong Tourism Board's accommodation finder sorts hotels into Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, the New Territories and the Outlying Islands, so compare areas by how close they are to an MTR or Airport Express station. Weigh cancellation terms against the Easter holidays, and check whether a room rate includes the Hotel Accommodation Tax described by the Inland Revenue Department.

Getting around

The Star Ferry links Central and Wan Chai on Hong Kong Island with Tsim Sha Tsui in Kowloon, and the tourism board lists Octopus, cards, digital payments and cash among the ways to pay. Taxis are color-coded by area, and the board says they must now offer electronic payment options alongside cash. On a foggy day, check ferry services before you set out.
