When to go

The climate table that the WMO relays from Peru's national weather service shows little rain in July and mean minimum temperatures close to freezing. Peru's government portal lists the Air Force Day holiday and the Fiestas Patrias national holidays in late July, so check the list for your travel year and confirm opening hours around those dates. Machu Picchu's daily visitor cap can rise in the high season, when extra routes open, so check ticket availability on the ministry's system early.

Flights

PromPerú's route to Machu Picchu starts with a flight from Lima to Cusco, so compare connection times and arrival times against your first day's plans. Peru's foreign ministry lists United States citizens as exempt from a tourist visa, and Migraciones requires a passport valid for at least six months. PromPerú notes that Cusco's elevation can cause altitude sickness, so read the CDC's Peru page and talk to your doctor before you travel. Before you go, check the State Department's page for Peru.

Where to stay

Compare properties in Cusco by their distance from the places on your list and from the road to Ollantaytambo, where the route PromPerú describes changes to the train for Machu Picchu. A Machu Picchu ticket is valid only for the date and time you choose and cannot be moved to another date, so line up your nights with your ticket and read each property's cancellation terms carefully, especially around the late July holidays.

Getting around

The route PromPerú describes runs from Cusco to Ollantaytambo by bus or car and then on to Machu Picchu by train, so compare departure times against your entry slot. The ministry's site lists three visit circuits and the routes inside each, some of them open only in the high season, so choose your circuit and route when you book. Carry your passport, which the ministry lists among the identity documents foreign visitors need to enter.
