Cayman Islands in December

When to go

December comes just after the Atlantic hurricane season, which the National Hurricane Center ends with November, though it notes that storms sometimes form outside those dates, and the islands mark its passage with Cayman Thanksgiving on the first Sunday of the month. It falls in the dry season, but the Cayman Islands National Weather Service says winter cold fronts can bring strong winds and rough seas, especially to the western and northern coasts, so compare the highs, lows and rainfall above with your plans. Christmas Day and Boxing Day are public holidays, so check the government's list for the days they fall on.

Flights

Customs and Border Control requires a passport or other document valid beyond your return date and a paid-up return or onward ticket, and airline staff provide the immigration and customs declaration cards every traveler presents on arrival; keep the immigration card, because you may need it when you leave. Read the agency's entry notice, which warns against traveling with illegal drugs, including THC and CBD products, before you pack, and check the State Department's page for the Cayman Islands for your own situation. Check the airlines directly for current flight and route information.

Where to stay

The airport authority places Owen Roberts International Airport in George Town, about five minutes from downtown and close to Seven Mile Beach, which it calls the heart of the islands' tourism industry. Compare a base along Seven Mile Beach or in George Town with the districts the public buses serve farther out, such as West Bay, Bodden Town, East End and North Side. Check cancellation terms and how your dates line up with Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Getting around

Taxis at the airport are dispatched first come, first served, and most major rental companies sit a short walk across the street. If you rent, the Department of Tourism says visitors can get a temporary driver's license at any rental car counter or at the police station, must meet its minimum age, and drive on the left. Public buses run from the Edward Street terminal in George Town, take US or Cayman Islands dollars and can be flagged down along the road, so check the routes against where you are staying.
