When to go

August is still summer in Banff. Environment and Climate Change Canada's most recent normals for the Banff station list warm days, chilly nights and a monthly precipitation total, so pack layers and rain gear and check the forecast close to your dates. The Government of Alberta lists Heritage Day on the first Monday of the month as an optional holiday that employers can choose to recognize.

Flights

Parks Canada names Calgary International Airport as the closest airport to the park and says several private transportation options run from Calgary to Banff, so compare a shuttle with driving yourself west from the city. The Government of Canada says US nationals don't need a visa or an electronic travel authorization to enter Canada and recommends that American citizens always travel with a valid passport. For US government guidance, see the State Department's page for Canada, and check the airlines directly for current flight and route information.

Where to stay

Parks Canada says a park pass is needed for time spent in the park, including stops in towns and villages, so plan for a pass that covers your whole stay in Banff or Lake Louise and check its fees page for the options. Roam Public Transit connects downtown Banff with Lake Louise Village and the Lakeshore, so if you won't drive, compare stays by how close they are to a Roam stop. The Government of Alberta's tourism levy page sets a levy on accommodation, so check whether the rates you compare include it, and compare cancellation terms before you commit.

Getting around

Parks Canada says Moraine Lake Road is closed to personal vehicles all year, so reach the lake on a Parks Canada shuttle, which needs a reservation and doesn't include the park entry fee, or with a licensed operator. Roam Public Transit runs a daily express between Banff and Lake Louise and recommends reservations in the summer months. Parks Canada says wildlife may be present anywhere in the park, including the townsites, and that feeding or disturbing it is illegal, so read its wildlife page before you set out.
